Yves Klein (1928–1962)
Le Vide (The Void), 1958
In Le Vide, Yves Klein transformed the Iris Clert Gallery into a completely empty, white-painted space, the room itself was the artwork. By removing all physical content, Klein presented emptiness as a radical expression of immateriality, inviting visitors to confront space, presence and perception.
The opening was a theatrical event: guards in formal dress greeted nearly 3,000 attendees, a deep blue curtain framed the gallery entrance and cocktails tinted with methylene blue were served - causing guests’ urine to turn blue hours later. Among the visitors was Albert Camus, who inscribed the guestbook with:
“Avec le vide, les pleins pouvoirs”
(“With the void, full powers”).
Klein’s work challenged the very nature of art, seeking to go beyond form, beyond image, into pure experience.
